Video Transcript for AQA English Language Paper 1 Question 1

Hello everybody, it's Mrs Ware here at Stream English, and today I'm going to be telling you all about AQA English Language Paper 1, Section A, Question 1 — in just 60 seconds!

Let’s get started.

For this question, you're going to be asked to list four things about something happening in the text. When choosing those four things, make sure you pick details that are really obvious. You don’t get any extra marks for being insightful or perceptive — this is all about explicit information, not interpretation. So just choose clear and straightforward answers.

Make sure you only write four things. If you write more than four, you won’t get extra marks. If you write fewer than four, you’ll miss out on marks — so four is the magic number.

You also need to stick to the line range given in the question. Don’t go outside that range — if you do, you won’t get any marks for those points. So make sure you’re only using the lines you’ve been told to use.

You’re allowed to copy directly from the text — summarising isn’t required — but don’t just copy the entire line range. If you do that, you'll get zero out of four, because it shows you haven’t selected specific information.

Finally, you should aim to spend no more than four minutes on this question — but in an ideal world, you’ll spend closer to two. This helps you save time for the longer, more analytical questions that follow.

And that’s Language Paper 1, Question 1 explained in under 60 seconds!
